Lost in the Detours: Lost in Noise, Found in Stillness

Life rarely slows down on its own. The world around us constantly hums with activity, emails, notifications, errands, responsibilities. Sometimes even our hearts feel loud, filled with worries, racing thoughts, and endless to-do lists. It’s easy to feel lost in the noise, disconnected from the peace God promises.

And yes—even for me, someone with a cochlear implant, you’d think I’d have no noise to face. But my thoughts? Oh, they are just as loud, if not even louder.

Yet Scripture reminds us:

“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from Him. Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.” (Psalm 62:5-6)

Stillness isn’t just the absence of movement—it’s the presence of God, an invitation into deeper communion with His presence. It’s the sacred space where our hearts can finally rest, breathe, and remember who holds it all together, allowing us to quiet the clamor of our thoughts and fears. In this profound tranquility, we find clarity and strength, realizing that it is the very stillness that fosters the conditions for spiritual growth and renewal in accordance to God’s will. It is where we allow our souls to yield to the immovable refuge of God, trusting in His unwavering support and guidance. In this sacred pause, we can acknowledge our vulnerabilities and surrender them into His care, knowing that even though He is still, God is active around us with His strength, orchestrating our lives with infinite wisdom and love. The stillness becomes a powerful reminder that, in resting, we are actively engaging in the most essential part of our faith, where the unseen and the eternal meet.

When Noise Becomes Overwhelming

I remember a season when the noise wasn’t just external—it was internal and the noise overflowed into my physical well-being. My mind raced constantly, anxieties spiraled, and I felt like I could never catch up. In times like that, I isolate myself because the noise is too much to bear. In the midst of all that busyness, I realized I hadn’t paused to listen to God in months.

That is the keyword…..pause. In the midst of overwhelming noise, it can be so difficult to find the moment to pause and truly listen for God’s voice.

Noise can disguise itself as productivity, good intentions, or even spiritual activity. But underneath it, our souls cry out for quiet. Quiet to hear His whisper, quiet to remember His presence, quiet to simply be with Him.

Finding God in the Pause

Stillness doesn’t always mean stopping everything forever. Sometimes it’s a short walk without a playlist, allowing you to truly engage with your surroundings, or a few precious minutes of focused prayer where you can pour out your heart and reflect on your life. It can also be as simple as opening your Bible with no agenda other than to sit in God’s presence, taking time to absorb the wisdom within its pages. It’s about intentionally slowing down to let God’s voice be heard over the noise of daily distractions, cultivating an atmosphere where you can find peace and clarity. In those moments of quiet, you can reconnect with your inner self and strengthen your relationship with God, reminding yourself that stillness is not a void, but a powerful space for growth and understanding.

It was in those quiet moments, I began noticing how God was working in my life even when I couldn’t see it. The detours, delays, and seemingly wasted seasons were shaping me quietly, preparing me for the next step in His plan.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where does noise feel the loudest in your life right now?
  2. When was the last time you experienced true stillness with God?
  3. What’s one small way you can intentionally create space for His whisper this week?

Stillness is not wasted time—it’s sacred time. It’s the space where God’s presence becomes clear, even amid life’s chaos.

Beautifully insightful and the questions embark on wonder and curiosity of my own daily noise, it’s always loudest in my thoughts that’s forsure. I write ALOT and that calms me and puts me into focus, my sauna is where I meditate if not outside and God is always with me and I with God, so that conversation never ends..

I love that! Writing is so therapeutic to me, and it is what allows me to become “quieter” for listening to God.
