One of my dear friends and director reached out to me to say a few words of encouragement. It was what I was needing and I had some tears. When I started my Mary Kay business, it was for two reasons, extra income but more importantly the ministry of sisterhood. While my testimony is being shaped into something that God will tell me when to share as there are chapters in my journey that are healing, I can say that this business was put in my heart to sow seeds that would impact many women I encounter. Whether it is finding a lipstick that brings confidence in a time of uncertainty to holding their hand as they say, “Yes” to an opportunity that can change their lives, I envision a big impact for how I can serve the women God puts in my heart.
Mary Kay is so much more than makeup and skincare when the consultant sees past the business structure and aligns her values with seeing the seeds she can sow for God’s kingdom. In fact, a brief Bible lesson here. Consultant in the Greek is “sumboulos” and that means “counselor” or “advisor.” While that is not necessarily what some may perceive themselves as when they say yes to starting a small business, it is what resonates in my heart.
The presence of a person who genuinely cares for you and a spirit-led conversation is the heart of why I chose to have my small business through Mary Kay. It does not matter how many consultants saturate the territories with their own business, but what matters is a consultant (counselor) who prays for you and your family, one who asks you how you are doing without asking for a sale, or one who allows herself to be vulnerable in posts or videos on social media to create the community of sisterhood that can build up other women in a time when we should straighten each others crowns.
The Great Counselor
A Mary Kay consultant who is a Christian and allows her business to be spirit-led is merely a vessel for God to use her to reach others. When we give our hearts to Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside us, and we have the greatest Counselor within us to guide us along our journey forward. Sometimes, we have to allow ourselves to be vulnerable to allow others to see Jesus shine through us. When a consultant views her Mary Kay business as merely a business rather than an opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus, it hinders the Holy Spirit’s guidance within from leaving a spiritually, positive impact in a person’s heart.
We often, in life, will meet individuals who are essentially the “younger version of ourselves.” Meaning, when we walk through dark waters, we learn and grow, and that experience becomes the “what I wish I had known when I was younger.” I deeply believe what we experience in life is what sets us up to be the living letter to our younger selves as we encounter many different faces. This premise applies to me as a writer because each post I publish is the “letter to my younger self.” The same goes for being a teacher; I am the teacher I wish I had had when I was younger. My Mary Kay business allows me to be the woman I needed when I needed a friend to hold my hand through uncharted waters.
Thank you for reading and supporting me.
Love, Tabitha
