Devotionals, especially those rooted in personal experiences, carry a wealth of wisdom within the carefully, crafted words. I cherish devotionals just as much as I cherish novels. When devotionals are based on personal experiences, with the writer weaving their own story into the narrative to connect with Scripture, each page symbolically holds their tears, frustrations, disappointments, failures, surprises, joys, and new mercies.
While I am in the process of drafting a devotional myself, I am relishing in the opportunity to cheer other writers on in their journeys. In the devotional, Even When, the author, Sara Cormany is a writer called by God to share a story to others that would bring hope and refresh their faith in a loving God who cares, “even when.”
As I read through each daily devotional, I could see the transparency Sara was laying out to her readers. When a devotional has personal experiences intertwined within the words, it is essentially the writer saying, “Here, read the highs and lows of my walk with the Lord.”
What resonated with me in each daily devotional was Sara’s ability to share just enough of her personal experiences to connect them to the Scriptures. It contained a wealth of substance for delving deeper into the Bible and recognizing God’s presence in everyday moments, especially during challenging times.
Studying God’s Word and spending time with Him will not be the same approach for everyone because there are different seasons each person endures. Sometimes in a season of peace, a person may spend more time dissecting what Scripture means while a person in a season of uncertainty will focus on Scripture that relates to their circumstances. Often, that looks like a topical or relatable devotional, or reading the “tear-filled” words of a person who has been through the dark waters that God walked them through.
I loved how Sara incorporated “even when” through each chapter to relate it to how God shows His love for us in the midst of the chaos. While I have not endured the circumstances as Sara did health wise, I have been through my “even when” moments for deployments, motherhood, losing my mom, watching my dad overcome a medical scare, marital struggles, giving up my dream job, insecurity, and infertility.
I believe this book will bring a refreshed hope to those who just need to hear those words of hope.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I am grateful for this opportunity to share a new writer and her words with you. Even When is a beautiful addition to your bookshelf.
Even when we walk through the challenges in life, God is faithful to hold us through our story.
